World countries vs US states: which is actually harder?

Both modes use the same rules — full names only, live map, save and resume — but they test very different kinds of memory. Here's how they actually compare.

Raw count favors states

Fifty is a much smaller number than 196, and most players who know their home country well can rattle off 35–40 states in the first few minutes. Getting from there to all 50 is where it gets hard, but the ceiling is much closer than in the world game.

The last stretch is harder for states

In the world game, most of the last 20–30 countries are ones players genuinely never learned — Pacific islands, small African nations, and so on. In the states game, the last handful (usually the small Northeast states — Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire — plus a couple of Midwestern states people mix up) are ones players did learn at some point but can't retrieve because they're geographically tiny and packed close together. It's a recall problem rather than a knowledge gap, which some players find more frustrating.

World countries rewards regional strategy more

Going region by region (Europe, then the Americas, then Africa, then Asia, then Oceania) works dramatically better than free recall for the world map, because each region has its own internal logic. The states map is smaller enough that most players don't bother with a systematic sweep and just go until they stall.

Typing speed matters more for states

Because state names are shorter on average and more familiar, a Timed run of the US States mode becomes more of a typing-speed test in the final minutes than a knowledge test. In the World Countries timed mode, the clock usually runs out on knowledge before it runs out on typing.

Which one should you play first?

If you want a completable win in under ten minutes, start with US States — most players who study for a day or two can get all 50. If you want the harder, longer benchmark, World Countries is the one worth coming back to over weeks or months, since very few people name all 196 on a first attempt.
